12 of the Best Chapter Books for Grade Four

Back in my short lived school teaching career I always thought grade four was the best age. Kids are still young enough where they liked school but old enough they caught on to sarcasm. It was like the sweet spot as far as ages go. Well, now my oldest is officially done grade four and I have to say, it was a great year! Since we added fostering into the mix this year things looked a lot different than I imagined they would, but one thing stayed the same: she read (and listened to) a lot of books. I asked her to share her favorite books from the year and…

Our Elementary Summer Read Aloud Book List

For the last few years I have been creating a list of read aloud ideas for our summers (I don’t know why I haven’t been doing this for the winters as well, I need to start this). I like to share our summer book list here because 1) others may enjoy it and 2) if I don’t save it here I may lose it. Unlike most of my book lists I create we haven’t read all the books on the list so I cannot guarantee they will be spectacular but I have either heard good things about them and/or have read some good reviews so I hope they will mostly…

Books for Kids Who Like Harry Potter or Aren’t Quite Ready to Read It

I feel like the Harry Potter series is one where kids fall into one of two categories: either they love it or they aren’t allowed to read it. I’m not here to tell you whether or not you should allow your kids to ready Harry Potter but if you have a fantasy reader in your home I’m betting they’ll love some of the books on this list. That being said, I’m reading the Harry Potter series for the first time myself and plan on sharing a “Should Christian’s Let Their Kids Read Harry Potter” post in the future after I read the last book, so stay tuned if you are…

Fantasy Book Recommendations For Elementary and Middle Grades

I was not a fantasy reader as a child and boy, do I ever feel like I missed out! I wasn’t even a fantasy reader as an adult until recently! I spent the last few years reading some elementary and middle grade fantasy to proof read for my kids and it really hasn’t been until this last year or so that I’ve started to get into older fantasy and I am really enjoying the books! I love that fantasy gives the characters purpose (some version of fighting the darkness) and isn’t so woe-is-me like other books can tend to get (obviously I’m generalizing here). My daughter has been a huge…
