Around Here | Four

Around here I am currently . . .

Listening to . . . this podcast with Tsh Oxenreider and Susan Wise Bauer, two amazing writers. Tsh wrote Notes from a Blue Bike (loved!) and Susan Wise Bauer wrote A Well-Trained Mind which I started last week.

Thinking about . . . thanks to the above podcast and books mentioned I am thinking (once again) about homeschooling, mainly classical education and the Charlotte Mason method. Whenever I think about the Charlotte Mason method it reminds me how I need take Raeca out to experience more about nature, which is how the outing from the photos in this post came about. We went out to a nearby pond with her little net and found minnows, crawfish, snails and birds what were catching fish for their supper.

Reading . . . a bit of each of these books.

Eating . . . popcorn, almost everyday, love that stuff.

  1. I just love y’alls adventure and how you are putting education into it 🙂 so fun. I’ve thought a lot about my future children and schooling – I definitely lean more towards homeschooling for a while.

      1. I am not really going with a certain method, I was homeschooled myself, so I have a good idea of what I want it to look like. I am going to subscribe to a curriculum by Timberdoodle- I really like their stuff!

  2. Can’t get enough popcorn, I crave it every night with a little nutritional yeast…yum. Great pictures, she looks so excited to be catching things with her net. Also I wanted to tell you I found a friend who will take my compost. She lives around the corner so it’s easy. You’ve totally inspired me to try to waste less

    1. I just picked up some nutritional yeast from the Bulk Barn, I’ve got to try it on popcorn (I came across a Dorito popcorn recipe that had nutritional yeast in it), do you put anything else on it?
And yay for finding someone to take your compost!

  3. I’ve never heard of these homeschool methods. I really don’t even know where to start learning about homeschooling but I dread the thought of sending the girls to school. Is that weird? Really, it’s just because I hate the inconvenience of taking them to school. And THAT just makes me sounds lazy. ~Jenna

    1. Haha, I totally get it. I think we will probably send Raeca to a private Christian school for kindergarten but after that I’d like to start homeschooling (both the classical and Charlotte Mason methods only really start with grade 1 anyway). But we are still playing it all by ear, we’ve got one more year until she is supposed to start kinder.

  4. Holistic homeschooling! That is SO great!! I work at a largely holistic school for kids with special needs, and it is always so great to hear parents caring that much about the type of education their children receive.

  5. I love your photos, they’re gorgeous, and I love the homeschooling ideas too. I’m still debating back and forth on what I want to do. One month I’m for sure I want to homeschool, then the next month I’m not. I have 2 years to decide at least!

  6. I was just eating popcorn minutes before reading your post. It’s the perfect snack (or dinner, when the husband isn’t around…). Looks like a fun little adventure you guys had!

  7. i’m really curious about homeschooling, i think i should read and know more about it. and i bet your little girl had a great time outdoors! the photo with the sun filtering through the shrub while she’s in hop-mode is lovely! 🙂

    1. Yeah, homeschooling has had me curious for a few years. I always thought people that were homeschooled were a little weird (because from the experience that I grew up with most kids that were homeschooled lived out in the middle of nowhere and never socialized at all) and then in high school a girl that had been homeschooled came to my private school and I remember her being a couple years younger than me and I was so in awe of her confidence and how smart and talented she was -I want to raise homeschoolers that turn out like that.

  8. I love the photos from your outdoor day of adventure… nature always offers the best lessons 🙂 I’ve been reading up on homeschooling + unschooling a lot in preparation for the upcoming baby years. I’ve never heard of the Charlotte Mason method, so I’ll definitely be looking into it! Thanks.
