advocate // for the orphan // orphan prevention

Most of you know that orphans is where my heart is at. Since I was a teenage I have dreamed about starting my own children’s home for orphans. I could throw facts and resources at you all day long in this category -but maybe I’ll just break it into a few different posts.

My friend Ashley is doing a series on her blog right now on five steps you can take to care for the orphan, check it out here!

If you have missed the previous advocate posts you can check them out:

It is estimated there are between 143 million and 210 million orphans worldwide. The orphan numbers DON’T include abandonment (millions of children) as well as sold and/or trafficked children.

The total number of orphans in Sub-Saharan Africa is greater than the total number of children in Denmark, Ireland, Norway, Canada and Sweden.

There are currently 68.9 million orphans in Asia, giving this region the largest absolute number of orphans in the world.

Approximately 250,000 children are adopted annually, but… each year 14, 505, 000 children grow up as orphans and age out of the system by age sixteen. Studies have shown that 10% – 15% of these children commit suicide before they reach age eighteen. These studies also show that 60% of the girls become prostitutes and 70% of the boys become hardened criminals.

The organizations and resources listed below don’t specifically work with orphans, but would be considered orphan prevention programs. While adoption and organizations working with orphans are great (and I will be sharing some of those yet) we need to figure out ways to reduce the number of children that are becoming orphans or it is a problem that will just continue.
